The Real Jamaican Plate
About Project
Popularizing the Unpopular
A living digital archive dedicated to the hands behind Jamaica's most overlooked food traditions — keeping culture alive, one vendor at a time.
Mission
Our mission is to preserve and promote Jamaica’s overlooked cultural traditions by creating a dynamic digital platform that showcases lesser-known local foods and culinary practices.
Through this initiative, we aim to safeguard the nation’s intangible cultural heritage, empower small food businesses by increasing their visibility and bridge the digital divide by giving local vendors access to online audiences
Story Behind the Page
Jamaica’s cuisine and food culture are an important part of the nation’s identity, passed down through generations of families. However, many of these small businesses struggle to gain visibility in the digital space, limiting their ability to reach wider audiences and grow their operations.
The impact of Hurricane Melissa further highlighted this challenge. The storm disrupted communities and affected many small food businesses by damaging infrastructure and reducing their ability to serve customers. It also exposed how vulnerable these businesses can be when they lack strong digital platforms to stay connected with their communities.
This project was created to address that gap by developing an interactive website that supports small food vendors, preserves Jamaica’s cultural traditions, and provides a digital platform that encourages sustainable local economic growth.
What makes us different
Commercial building affected by melisssa
We aren’t looking for white tablecloths or "Instagrammable" decor. We look for the smoke from a pimento wood fire and the taste of a perfected recipe. We value authenticity over aesthetics.
We prioritize the "extremely small" the roadside stands, the community bakers and the hidden cook-shops. We go where we are needed most, ensuring that Jamaica’s true flavors don't just survive, but thrive.
